What is Islam?

Islam was the last religion to be sent down to man kind by Allah. Islam's prophet Muhammed (s.a.v) was appointed by Allah as an example and as a massare of the religion. The Qur'an being the holy book of Islam was passed on by Allah through the Prophet Muhammed (s.a.v) as a guild to man mind. The Qur'an is also a source full of purity.

At Allah's level the last and the true religion is only Islam, at present and in the future the whole of mankind will be obliged to act in accordance to the laws, the rights and wrongs set forth by Islam. Allah will judge man kinds behaviour and work in accordance to the laws of Islam and of the Qur'an.

Islam is not a new religion, but the same truth that Allah revealed through all His prophets to every people. For a fifth of the world’s population, Islam is both a religion and a complete way of life. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness, and the vast majority have nothing to do with the extremely grave events which have come to be associated with their faith.

Who are the Muslims?

One billion people from a vast range of races, nationalities and cultures across the globe – from the southern Philippines to Nigeria – are united by their common Islamic faith. About 18% live in the Arab world, substantial parts of Asia and Africa are Muslim, while significant minorities are to be found in Russia, China, North and South America and Europe.

What do Muslims Believe?

Muslims believe in One Unique, incomparable God; in the Angels created by Him; in the Prophets through whom His revelations were brought to mankind; in the Day of Judgement and individual accountability for actions; in God’s complete authority over Human destiny and in life after death. Muslims believe in a chain of prophets starting with Adam and including Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Moses, Aaron, David, Soloman, Elias, Jonah, John the Baptist, and the Jesus, peace be upon them. But God’s final message to man, reconfirmation of the eternal message and summing-up of all that has gone before was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed through Gabriel.

What does ‘Islam’ Mean?

The Arabic word ‘Islam’ simply means ‘submission’, and derives from a word meaning ‘peace’. In a religious context it means complete submission to the will of God. ‘Allah’ is the Arabic name for God, which is used by Arab Muslims and Christians alike.

Why does Islam often seem strange to Non-Muslims?

Islam may seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because religion does not dominate everyday life in the West today, whereas Muslims have religion always uppermost in their minds, and make no division between secular and sacred. We believe that the Divine Law, the Shariah, should be taken seriously, which is why issues related to religion are still so important.

Do Islam and Christianity have different origins?

No. Together with Judaism, they go back to the Prophet and patriarch Abraham, and their three Prophets are directly descended from his sons – Mohammed from the eldest, Ishmael, and Moses and Jesus from Isaac. Abraham established the settlement which today is the city of Makkah, and built the Ka’bah towards which all Muslims turn when they pray.

FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM..

Islam is based on five foundations which is recognised as the "pillars of Islam" these pillars are duties in which Muslims must do in order to outline their faith towards Allah the all mighty.

The pillars are:

1. Shahdah, this is the declaration of faith. Shahadah is justification that "there is no god but Allah and Muhammed (S.A.V) is the messenger of Allah. With this justification a person is both accepted in to Islam and a Muslim once again declares their faith in God and Islam.

2. Salah, is probably the most important factor of showing your faith. Salah is praying five times a day during the set periods. Salah involves standing, bowing and prostrating with your head to the ground while kneeling.

3. Sawn, is fasting for a 30 days during the month of Ramadan. Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink anything from dust till dawn. Once the sun has gone down, Muslims are allowed to eat and drink as much as they like.

4. Zakah, is the charity of Islam. Muslims are expected to give 1/40 of their income to those who are in need. The charity can go to an Islamic institute such as a mosque, or to the very poor people who are unable to buy any food. This is done so a Muslims income is purified.

5. Hadj, this is the most extraordinary journey in a Muslims life, it is expected for a Muslim if they can to go on a pilgrimage to the holy land Mecca. Here the Muslims perform the duties which is expected from a "hadji". Once in the holy lands, Muslims visit the historical places, stone the devil, and perform a lot of worshipping.

HOW TO PRAY?

Salah or Praying is important as it is the second pillar of Islam, once a person has declaired their faith to islam, that person is then required to show devotion by praying five times a day. Praying is very important as it not only shows your devoton towards God but it also shows your dedication towards your faith.

Muslims are expected to perform the praying ritual at the set periods of the day. The periods are fajr (dawn), zuhr (noon), asr (mid-noon), magrib (evening), and isha which is late evening.

Just before praying muslims are expected to clense thenselfs in the mannor in which it was set forth, this action is called Vu'du or abolition.
