Nabī (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) said: “There has come to you Ramadān, the month of barakah (blessing). In this month, Allāh Ta‘ālā will send down His mercy, enveloping you [with good]; erases shortcomings (sins), and accepts the du‘ās made in it. Allāh Ta‘ālā gazes at you, competing with each other in good, and boasts to His angels about you.” (at-Targhīb wa’t-Tarhīb)
Tarāwīh Salāh is a twenty-rak’ah sunnah al-muakkadah performed in the month of Ramaḍān. Rasūlullāh (sallallāhu alayhi wa sallam) performed this salāh, and so did his four Khalifahs. To perform Tarawih Salah in jamā‘ah (congregation) is a sunnah al-kifāyah. One who intentionally abandons the jamā‘ah taking place at the masājid and performs it at home will have forsaken what is virtuous.
However, if one performs Tarāwīh Salāh at home in jamā‘ah, they will gain the merits of jamā‘ah while being deprived of the benefits of the congregation at the masjid.
It is more rewarding to give salām after every two rak‘ahs and complete twenty rak‘ahs with ten Salāms. It may also be performed by giving salām after every four rak‘ahs. However, if there are followers of the Shafi‘ī Madhhab among the congregation, salām should definitely be given at every two rak‘ahs.
In the event of giving salām after every two rak‘ahs, Tarāwīh Salāh is to be performed like the sunnah of Maghrib Salāh and like the Sunnah of Ishā Salāh if salām is given at every four rak‘ahs.
When Tarāwīh Salāh is performed in jamā‘ah, the musallis should make niyyah for the Tarāwīh Salāh and to follow the imām. The imām would then do the recitation aloud. In the appointment of an imām, accuracy in the recitation of the Qur’ān should be the first criterion rather than a melodious voice or speediness. If one arrives at the masjid after the imām has started Tarāwīh Salāh, he should perform the farḍ part of Ishā Salāh before joining the Tarāwīh Salāh. Once the Tarāwīh Salāh is finished, he would then complete the rak‘ahs he has missed. Then he will perform Witr Salāh individually. This is the favourable way of performing it. Nevertheless, one can also perform Witr Salāh behind the imām, and then complete the rak‘ahs of Tarāwīh Salāh he has missed.
One who has performed Tarāwīh Salāh individually may pray Salāh al-Witr behind the imām.
Suppose neither the imām nor the jamā‘ah performed Ishā Salāh in a congregation. In that case, they may not perform Tarāwīh Salāh in jamā‘ah because the jamā‘ah of Tarāwīh depends on the jamā‘ah of the farḍ part of Ishā Salāh.
Tarāwīh is a sunnah of the time (Ramaḍān al-Sharīf However, it is not subject to fasting. Therefore, those who have not fasted for any reason (such as sickness or travelling) should perform the Tarāwīh Salāh.
