Abu Ayyub al-Ansari Radhiyallahu Anhu narrated: Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “Whoever fasts in the Month of Ramadhân and follows it with six (more) days in Shawwâl will be rewarded as if he had fasted the entire year.” Indeed, Allah Subhanahu has informed that He would reward one good act in ten folds. Therefore, one day of fast in Ramadhan al-Sharif will be rewarded as ten days and thirty days as ten months. The reward of fasting six days in Shawwal will be like two months. Those who fast in Ramdhan and (six days) in Shawwal will be as if they spent the whole year fasting. Fast of Shawwal may be kept six days consecutively or in separate days.
These six days of Shawwal fast resemble the Sunnah parts of five daily Salaah. Just like Allah Azza wa Jalla completes the shortcomings that occur in Fardh Salaah (prayers) with the Sunnah parts, He does the similar for Ramadhan al-Sharif Fast with the Shawwal fast. If a person completes the six fast of Shawwal, it indicates his Ramadhan fasts are accepted. When Allah Ta’ala accepts the ibadah of His slave, He allows them to follow it with another righteous deed.
Fasting Ramadhan al-Sharif is a cause of the forgiveness of past sins. And fasting in Shawwal for six days is a sort of offering Shukr (thanks) for earning forgiveness in Ramadhan al-Sharif.
THE FIVE ADVICE BETTER THAN ONE THOUSAND ADVICE
During the khilafat (caliphate) of Hadhrat Umar Radhiyallâhu Anhu, the uncle of Rasulullah Sallallâhu Alayhi wa Sallam Hadhrat Abbas Radhiyallâhu Anhu once advised his son Abdullah Radhiyallâhu Anhu:
“I see that this blessed person (meaning Umar Radhiyallâhu Anhu) has preferred your views over that of the seniors in administrative affairs. Now, hear from me this five advice and take heed well:
Do not ever disclose his secrets.
Do not backbite anybody at his court.
Do not ever lie to him.
Do not ever disobey his command.
Finally, do not ever betray him!
Regarding this advice, Shabi (Rahmatullâhi Alayhi) said, “Certainly each of this advice is more valuable than a thousand ones.”
